What to Actually Look For When You’re Hunting for Help.
If you’ve started shopping for outside creative or marketing support, you’ve probably noticed the same confusing thing we did (after all, before we were Founding Creative, our team worked for over a decade each on in-house teams at companies big and small). One of the most perhaps overused and vague things that caused confusion? Everyone calls themselves an “agency,” and almost nobody defines what that means.
Here’s the honest breakdown from our vantage point, and where we fit in it.
Design Studio: Deep, Narrow, and Beautiful
A design studio is usually a small, specialized team obsessed with well-honed specific crafts. Think logo design, brand identity, packaging, maybe a beautifully designed website. The work is often gorgeous. The catch: a design studio typically stops at the deliverable. They’ll hand you a brand book or a Figma file and move onto the next deliverable or wish you well.
That’s not a knock, it’s a scope choice and ultimately a business decision out there to fulfill a certain need. If you need one specific, high-craft thing built once, a design studio can be exactly right.
Traditional Ad Agency: Big Campaigns, Big Budgets
The classic “agency” model. Think Mad Men, but with more (likely too many) Slack channels. These are usually built around campaigns: television, big media buys, programmatic, brand advertising. It’s built for companies with big budgets and long timelines, and it usually isn’t built for a business that needs to see results move a needle month over month.
Where Founding Creative Sits
We built Founding Creative because most growing businesses don’t actually need to choose between “make it look good” and “make it work.” They need both, from people who are down to get their hands dirty working in the weeds while being versatile and experienced enough to go high-level and see the forest through the trees. We’re flexible to our client’s needs and meet them where they’re at. Whether it’s a one-off deliverable or ongoing creative followed by marketing and design support.
That means our team can:
Build the brand
Brand Strategy and Design, Brand Consulting, Logo Design
Build the digital presence
Web Strategy and Design, Web Development, UI and User Experience Design (UED), Content Management Systems
Create and animate it
Animation, Event Marketing Digital Animations
Move the needle
Digital Marketing Creative, Marketing Creative and Content, Copywriting
Make it findable
SEO and ongoing SEO strategy so that thing of beauty we all worked so hard on can actually be found
Cover the custom stuff
You dream it, we make it happen by bringing creative needs outside the categories above to life. All handled the same way: one team, one throughline.
That last point matters more than it sounds like it should. A lot of businesses get a stunning new site or brand and then wonder, six months later, why nothing changed. Design without a growth plan is a portfolio piece. Growth without design is a missed opportunity. We think both halves belong under one roof — which is also why our own approach is usually sequential: get the creative and technical foundations in place first, layer in content creative and local visibility next, and bring in more robust digital and creative efforts once there’s traffic and a list worth marketing to.
The Practical Difference
When you hire a design studio, you’re hiring craftspeople for a specific artifact.
When you hire a traditional agency, you’re often hiring a media-buying machine.
When you hire Founding Creative, you’re hiring a team that treats brand, design, web, and marketing as one connected system because in practice, that’s what they are. A logo doesn’t mean much without a brand strategy behind it. A website is only as good as the UX decisions and content built into it. An event, an animation, a campaign all land better when the same team that built your brand is the one bringing it to life everywhere else. Your website’s performance is a design challenge and SEO conundrum. Your brand’s credibility has a visual as well as a messaging solution that needs to consistently work together. Splitting those across three, four, or five different vendors usually means nobody owns the outcome.
The Takeaway
There’s no wrong answer for your business. Sometimes you genuinely just need a logo, and sometimes you genuinely just need a media buy. But if what you actually want is a partner who can take you from “we need a brand” to “we need this thing to keep growing,” that’s the gap Founding Creative was built to fill.
If that sounds like where you are, let’s talk.
